This year this is a week long period from 11 to 18 June.

There may be some people at the Town and Country Show in Cambridge on 11 June, but nothing formal has currently been organised. If anyone's interested in volunteering to be there, find a spot and devise some way of directing people to it, do please comment here, or better still, comment on the Ravelry group.

Every session in Cambridge for February will be a "stash swap" session. The stash swaps are an opportunity for anyone who has stash (yarn or books etc) that they do not want to bring it along in case someone else would like it. To take part you don't have to bring anything - its still OK to take something home.

Anyone who would like to make a contribution for anything they take home from the stash swap might like to think about donating something to a charity. There is no obligation to do so. You might like to look at "pennies per hour of pleasure" http://www.p-hop.co.uk for example.

Hello all: Sunday 12th September is International Crochet Day! To celebrate this, there'll be crocheting at, or near, Milton Country Park Visitors' Centre from 11 am on Sunday. (While it's International Crochet Day, I know we've had lots of crocheters at International Knitting Day so knitters might be welcome too...)

There will also be a Food and Farming Event on the same day; not sure but there may be a nominal admission charge of £1/person or £2/car but the event sounds extremely good, too...

We've added an extra date for May; Sunday 30 May, 2pm onwards (or earlier if you get hungry), Devonshire Arms; Devonshire Road, CAMBRIDGE. This is because we have a 5th weekend in the month, and also because an impromptu Sunday knitting for my birthday last month was so very pleasant and repeating the experience seemed like a good idea. The roast beef is highly recommended; but everyone else's food looked lovely too!

Worldwide Knit In Public Day (WWKIP), Saturday 12 June

There are two options so far for WWKIP Day:

The Town and Country fair on Parkers Piece meeting from 13.00 at the four lamps, or alternatively Reality Checkpoint, (dead centre of Parker's Piece) within easy seating distance. Look for some bunting and Clare's blue bike with red and white polka dots on it, which will make it easier to find us. If rain arrives, we will be in The Avery Pub, the only one on Parker's Piece. Bring a picnic, your knitting, whatever you like. There will not be seating provided, so if you want something to sit on, other than the floor, please bring it with you. There are plenty of food stalls and facilities so if you don't want to bring stuff you can get it there.

Waterbeach Feast, Waterbeach - people will be there from around 12:30; the Parade is at about 2; there are Entertainments including a brass band, "hands on science from Mad Science", demonstrations by the Army (they did a brilliant emergency-bridge-building demo last year!); and various stands with plants, home-made cakes, and so on. The theme this year is "Something beginning with D..." Not sure yet where we'll be on the Green because stalls haven't been allocated. It is probably best to get the train to Waterbeach as parking gets pretty fraught and the buses get badly held up in the traffic... But if you're driving, mail Liz (see above); there are places you can park without getting in the way.

There is no obligation to do so. You might like to look at "pennies per hour of pleasure" . Or you might be interested in the information on the Yarn Harlot's blog, on her continuing Tricoteuses sans frontières/Knitters Without Borders appeal. (Whichever way you choose to do it, the donation goes to Médécins sans frontières/Doctors Without Borders.

Knitting at the Alex

Well, it seemed to go very well at the Alex this evening; they were happy to see us; I didn’t have food,but people who did said that it was pretty good and reasonably priced; we colonised the back bar and they were fine with that; the lighting was very good; the beer/cider wasn’t as good as the Blue (but then, frankly, where is?) but the wine was better. I think we probably tripled the evening food order.

I think the idea at the end of the evening was that we’d do it as an additional evening next month, too; and then work out what we wanted to do after Christmas via
e-mail/blog/Ravelry/opinions from people who were there…

Personally, I thought it was a very nice evening. Comments, anyone?

Short notice of an extra date

Hi - after a couple of conversations recently, we're going to try an extra (exploratory) knitting date on Tuesday 20th.

We love the Cambridge Blue, obviously - we’ve been going there for years, and the beer/cider’s good, and so’s the food… But the conservatory is a bit of a difficult space, and nobody really likes the long table, particularly when the garden’s open as you do tend to get thwacked over the head by people’s bags, or beer spilled down your back… Tigerchilli has suggested the Alexandra Arms as being possibly an alternative venue, as it’s a lot quieter early in the week and just up the road from the Blue.

It’s a bit further along Gwydir Street - keep going towards Norfolk Street and it’s on the opposite side of the road to the Blue. There's a map here. If we hate it (or they hate us), we can forget about it, but maybe worth having an alternative venue in mind?

Exciting Exhibition and Events in Bury St Edmunds

I spent today at the "Making and Mending" exhibition at the Bury St Edmunds Gallery. I really recommend it.

There are some great events, too. Today (2 October) and tomorrow (3 October)Celia Pym is busily darning items brought in by memebrs of the public.

Next week (Fri 9 and at 10 October)Kai-Oi Jay Yung will be making sock monkeys under an amazing wigwam made out of brightly coloured scraps of fabric. Jay would love it if local knitters came along to knit socks, make monkeys etc. I'm going to go along again on the Friday.

For fellow public transport lovers: the Bury St Edmunds bus leaves Drummer St at quarter to the hour and comes back from Bury St Edmunds bus station at quarter past.

Don't forget that there are also 3 yarn suppliers (Singer, Rendall's and Wibbling Wools in the centre of Bury St Edmunds) and, if you 'phone beforehand, you might even be able to combine it with a trip to the yarn Gallery in Flempton. Oh, and do go and take a look at the new lampost cozy outside Wibbling Wools.

Ely Apple Day

Ely ktog will be at the annual Ely Apple Day, celebrating all things apple, on Saturday 17th October between 10am and 4pm. If anyone could make anything (apple-related or not, although it would be good to fill a fruit bowl with knitted/crocheted apples!) it would be fantastic because the more money we make the better….it doesn’t matter how small - we’ll sell it! We're joining forces with the Ely coffee and crafts group who have nominated Arthur Rank as our charity, to whom all proceeds from the event will be donated. * Apologies to anyone who turned up on Saturday and didn't work out we were at the Grads café; or indeed just didn't make it up the stairs in the absence of the lift! We were assured on Tuesday night that the room itself would be open even though the bar is now closed during the day. And according to the notice next to the lift, the lift's due to be operational again before the next Saturday meeting; but only the day before, so you might want to phone on the day if making it up the stairs is likely to be difficult - (01223) 337766 - there is a service lift, and staff were happy to help; but it only goes to the second floor. Kudos to Clare, Katie and Genevieve, and Diana, who did fight their way up there against all odds!

Jenny Dean has been researching and using natural plant dyes for over 25 years. She has written widely on the subject and her books include “The Craft of Natural Dyeing” and “Wild Colour”. She was featured in a Radio 4 programme with Kaffe Fasset and her work has been the focus of several magazine articles. She regularly teaches and lectures on natural dyeing at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, Cambridge University Botanic Garden and for the Royal Horticultural Society. On this course, students will discover some of the sources of rich, glowing dye colours to be found in the plant world. Participants will learn how to apply natural dye colours to textile fibres, using a variety of materials and techniques. By the end of the day, each student will have a personal set of sample cards for future reference and the knowledge to further explore this fascinating ancient craft.

Just to let you know that The Shop are having a Winter Fair on Sat 29th Nov. The Shop is where the Make do and Mend event happened.

Anyway the Fair starts at Midday and goes on till 4pm. There are going to be crafts stalls, decorations, grotto, face painting and a reindeer and the cafe pretty much next door will be open too. Very child friendly. The organisers are setting up a knitting area and any one who would like to go and knit is very welcome. There maybe other fair goers there who would like to learn to knit and it would be great if we could help out. They are going to provide yarn and needles for folks.

Would be great if you could make - sounds like it could be a lot of fun :-)

They're looking for knitters to knit lots of little hats for their smoothie bottles, for each one sold they and Sainsbury's will give 50p to Age Concern. Last year over 400,000 hat were knitted raising £200,000 for Age Concern and this year they're aiming for ½ a million hats!

That may sound like a tall order but with a Big Knit blog and fantastic new hat patterns for you to try each week there is plenty of inspiration. There will be competitions in Simply Knitting and Let's Knit out in the middle of September and Knitting magazine is showcasing hat patterns from the well-known hand knit designers in their issue out at the beginning of October.

Getting to IKnit Day on Saturday

Four of us (Emma-Jane, Liz, Rosie and Sue) will be on the 0928 out of Ely which is the 0935 from Waterbeach and the 0944 from Cambridge, getting into Kings Cross at 1034. We won't be there as the doors open, but it shouldn't be too long thereafter. Anyone else is welcome to join us. (Those of us joining north of Cambridge will be in the back half of the train when it arrives at Cambridge; otherwise, we could join up at the end of the platform at Kings Cross...)

I'll post any information on weekend line closures on London Underground as edits to this post as I discover them - I've been on holiday this week but usually they're announced in reasonable time.

Knitting Picnic in Bury St Edmunds Sat 23 Aug

By popular request, we're having another knitting picninc in Bury St Edmunds. Better still, the lovely Lyndsey of Wibbling Wools has offered us the use of her workroom to use as a dining room if there is wet weather. We've also invited as many Bury St Edmunds-based knitters as we can find.

We'll be assembling at the Abbey Gardens at 11.15. If it is wet, we'll meet in the gate house (arch) but if it is dry we'll head just beyond it.

If you're coming by bus, the bus leaves Drummer Street at 9.45., arriving at Bury at 10.50. Ask for a dayrider plus, which costs £5 and can be used all day on any Stagecoach buses (so if you're travelling to Drummer St by Stagecoach, get your ticket on the first bus you use).

Bring a picnic and be warned: you will probably find LOTS that you want to buy in Wibbling Wools. Other attractions include an ice cream kiosk and aviary in the park and the Saturday market in the town centre...

Some pictures from the Ravelympics2008 cast-on event on Friday evening (my camera gave up early on so most of these are Rosie's) - the weather cheered up just enough to sit in the garden at the Blue although it was still chilly at times...

Through a friend I have been approached by Helen Judge Helen’s webpage and Cathy Dunbar with a very interesting knitting proposition. They are coming to the Grad Pad on the 12th of August to explain more. Read on (an overview of the email I received from Helen)

Cathy and I are planning to do a knitting performance at Wysing during Wysing Inside out 19th Sept and 5th Oct

We are looking for Xtravert knitters to join us in a performance where we knit a small set/insallation. In the passed Cathy did an amazing Knitting instillation where she got people to Knit them selves into it. This has been an inspiration for us to collaborate on a knitting project with some props from our society of xtras set (the couch and the standard lamp) with knitted costumes and Knitters, knitting themselves into the set. We would love it if people of all knitting abilities could join us with their knitting in preparation and for the day, and we are open to any knitting ideas. The performance will be out doors (weather permitting) and be documented to be displayed at Wysing after the event.

Dates/times/details are still being ironed out.

So this is just a brief bit of info for anyone who hasn't (yet) been to a KTog.

All our regular meetings (the ones at the University Centre and the Cambridge Blue in Cambridge and the ones at the Lamb in Ely) are ones where we turn up with whatever we are making at the moment, (plus any books/magzines we've discovered and are happy to pass round) then we sit and knit/crochet/chat and sip/chomp (the sipping/chomping aspect are quite important, we don't pay to use venues, so we buy drinks and food to justify our presence to the management!).

And if anyone is baffled by a pattern/struggling with a stitch there's always someone else willing to advise/help (but never in a patronising way!). If you're new, please tell us so, so that we can introduce ourselves. (This may sound a bit weird, surely group members know when someone is new? Actually, though, as few of us manage to get to every single meeting, we're not always certain if someone we've not seen before is new, or is maybe someone who turns up on days we've not been able to make! And I've got a sieve-like memory, which doesn't help!)

Sometimes some of us will be working on charity/group projects but they are never compulsory and I've never known a meeting where everyone is working on the same sort of project. And there's almost always someone doing crochet/cross stitch alongside the knitters.

So, Anonymous, I hope that answers your query and that you and your friend can come and join us soon. If there's anything else anyone would like to ask: fire away!

We’ll use the lamposts in the centre of Parker’s Piece (or as close as we can get to them!) as our muster point. If you’d like to bring a picnic, come along to the lamposts at 12.30pm. If it is wet or if you just want to come for the afternoon, then assemble at the lamposts at 2pm. If it is raining we’ll then choose either a weatherproof location at the fair or a nearby hostelry.

Twelve Go (Yarn) Mad in Norwich

Saturday's trip to Norwich was huge fun. Here we are at the bus stop on the UEA campus (where we were entrhalled, inspired and amused by the exhibits in the Cloth and Culture Now exhibition). Note the eager excitement on our faces as we gleefully consider out next destination... knitting for special care units

The following email has been forwarded to me and could well be of interest!

I don't know whether this is of any interest but Radio Cambridgeshire and CSV Action were advertising getting everyone knitting for Bonny Babies charity - to supply 80 Special Care Baby Units across the country (including Addenbrooke's) with knitted bonnets, bootees, cardigans etc. Radio Cambridgeshire are offering a free knitting pattern to get people started!

Now We Are Five!

I think that Liz is planning to add some photos soon. Meantime, we've been featured as I Knit London's first-ever knitting group of the week. We also owe I Knit a big thak you for providing the delicious lollies that Liz brought along to the party (I can vouch for their yumminess): thank you, I Knit!

the UK crochet coral reef project

Coral reefs and the UK aren't often mentioned in the same breath (and if, like me, you grew up with frequent dips in the North Sea, then you probably had your breath taken away by the sheer coldness). But, bear with me: this is the KTog's chance to participate in one of the most exciting conservation projects going. On Sunday I went to a workshop at The Royal Festival Hall, with Margaret Wertheim, of The Institute for Figuring, and crocheters from all over the UK and found out more.

The aim is for crocheters--and that's you, even if you've never picked up a hook before since only the most basic stitches are used--to create corals, urchins, sea anemones, sea slugs (and even hitherto undiscovered deep sea life forms)--to make a coral reef to be displayed at The Royal Festival Hall this summer. At the same time a fabulous reef from the US will be on show in The Hayward Gallery. Or, as Wikipedia puts it: "The crochet reef project is an interdisciplinary marriage of geometry, marine ecology, environmental activism, feminine handicraft and collective feminist practice." So it is good to report that Gerard, from I Knit London, was there on Sunday, flying the flag for men with an environmental conscience and love of craft!

What does coral matter to us?
Well, according to Margaret,

we should think of coral reefs as being like "the canary in the coalmine", as an early warning system for disaster. Incidentally, that fabulous sea creature she is displaying was made by someone who went to a workshop in LA, never having crocheted a stitch before. Be warned: this project can become addictive! Coral reefs are being destroyed at 5 times the rate of rainforests. Their decline is largely due to a rise in sea temperature.

At the same time, our oceans are becoming increasingly clogged up with plastic detritus, which is why we're being encouraged to make yarn from plastic bags to use in this project (frankly, anything flexible can be used, packing ribbon looks good, and we were shown some wonderful jellyfish made from a combination of crochet and sliced up plastic bottles.)

You can read much more about the project here. UK contributions will need to be at The Royal Festival Hall by 6 May (I'll be happy to collect them at KTogs) and you'll need to sign a submission form (again, I have a stock of these).

To get you inspired, here's what I've done since hearing Margaret speak:

First, Sunday's work. I'm not sure whether this is a coral

or the beginnings of a jelly fish!

Monday: sea anemones (combining some Lang Mille Colori left over from a scarf with some fluffy stuff that I found at a stash swap).

Today: hyperbolic sea slug, made from some of my handpainted yarn. (This one may not make it to the reef, as it has great potential as a bracelet)

Edited to add: the staff at Cambridge Station will (as Ann and I discovered) insist that you don't need the PlusBus (as the Ranger ticket covers bus rides from Norwich station to the city centre). But you do need it: please tell them that you are travelling through several zones in Norwich.

train/bus users will return to the City Centre (Castle Plain) using bus 26/27. Here you can decide whether you'd like to head straight back to the station (trains leave at 15.40; 16.40 and 17.34) or to have some free time. Good places to visit close to Castle Plain include The Yarn Stall on Norwich Market (lots of "value" yarns including Twilleys, Wendy, James Brett, Elle and Stylecraft...owner indicated that he may be prepared to offer discounts if there are enough of us buying enough!) and Jarrolds department store, which has a good selection of art/cardmaking/scrapbooking materials on the top floor).

New dates for Ely Ktog

As I'm sure most of you've heard by now, the first Ely ktog was a resounding success with 8 attendees plus one tiny baby - start 'em young! Emily and I think it's a good idea to alternate Ely meetings with Cambridge ktogs, so that there's a choice of venues, with something happening every week, and to start this off we've decided to hold another Ely ktog this Thursday 6th March at 7pm, followed by Thursday 20th March (ok, the real reason is that we didn't want to wait 3 weeks before meeting up again!).
As you can see from the photos, much knitting was done, a fair amount of beverage was consumed, and there was a good assortment of knitting literature to peruse! What more could a girl ask for?
Thanks again to everyone who helped to make the first Ely ktog such a great evening and we hope to see you on Thursday at 7pm in the bar of the Lamb Hotel in Ely.

Twenty-four yarnaholics (and one baby), this must have been our highest-ever turnout. And the most amazing goodies were being swapped: yarn, magazines and books (but not babies).

I've just trawled back through the archives of Yahoo's UK Handknitters group and realised that the first ever Cambridge KTog was on 19 March 2003 when about half a dozen of us descended on The Eagle.

I think we should celebrate! Any ideas on what/when/where?

There's a rather interesting exhibition coming up at the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich and I wondered whether anyone would be interested in a group visit (possibly also taking in Norfolk Yarns (for such tempting brands as Noro, Louisa Harding, Colinette).

We could travel by train from Cambridge (via Ely, so there'd be connections of sorts from Waterbeach and March) then we'd have to take buses in Norwich. (Rather wonderfully, if going to Norfolk Yarns, the stop you ask for is "Mecca").

I'm thinking of March/April and days that I could do are Weds, Fri and Sat. Would be quite happy to go twice (one Saturday, one weekeday!)

The exhibition also has some intriguing sounding workshops coming up.

Post 100; and into 2008!

Rosie noticed we'd got up to Post 99 last night, and I said I'd write something for the new year...

Do we need resolutions? apart from to go onwards and upwards again? I first found out about the group by a chance encounter with Rosie, on a beautiful sunny day by the Millpond nearly 4 years ago, and it was already pretty well-established; although there were still some evenings where there'd only be 2 or 3 of us (or on a couple of memorable occasions, 1, and then 2, and then 1!) ... Seems unthinkable now!

And for those around during the day on a Tuesday, another reminder about the new Tuesday Group run by Margaret Knight - it's all a matter of passing the word around...

Earlier in the summer, the Cambridge KTog met the Bury St Edmunds group (no pics, but it would be great to meet with any other local group!)

Got any odds and ends of craft materials/books/yarn you'd like to clear out? Bring them along! NB you don't have to bring stuff to take stuff home and (note to self) just because you give stuff away you do not have to acquire new stuff...

Stash swaps are extra good if you're a new knitter and want to try out different types/weights of yarn without spending any money. And they are very good for the soul if you are an old-hand with a stash mountian. Now I must go and dive into the interstices of my many laundry baskets of yarn to see what gems I can part with...

The outcome was really impressive but it sounded like a lot of hard work and a lot of pressure on your fingers :-( Anyway my ever industrious ly creative friend Jasmine sent me this link:

new weekday knitting group in central Cambridge

There's a new knitting group which will be meeting in Cambridge on Tuesdays, during the day, starting this week.

The organiser is Margaret Knight, and this is what she says:

"I am starting with the first meeting on Tuesday 10a.m.-12, at Christchurch, Newmarket Road (just by Cobbles Yard).Meetings will be every week during school term time and the cost will be £2 but this will include refreshments."

Margaret has chosen a day and time that she hopes will suit anyone who finds it difficult to get to evening/weekend meetings . Maybe you know somebody who can't make KTogs but would love to be in a knitting group? If so, do pass the details on!

Despite our large numbers, and the sheer quantity of stash-swap on the table while they were trying to provide us with food, the new management at the Cambridge Blue were relatively unfazed, with only one tricoteuses joke...
